Alpha Tau Enters the Spotlight as Big Pharma’s Billion-Dollar Bets on Targeted Radiation Start Delivering

A fresh Phase 3 success at Bristol Myers puts alpha radiation back in focus. Alpha Tau is testing a different way to deliver it, with pivotal skin-cancer results approaching and a U.S. commercial partner already on board.

Alpha Tau Enters the Spotlight as Big Pharma’s Billion-Dollar Bets on Targeted Radiation Start Delivering

On October 12, Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY) reported that an experimental cancer medicine using alpha radiation had met its primary goal in a randomized Phase 3 trial. RYZ101 delayed disease progression compared with standard treatment in patients with certain advanced neuroendocrine tumors after an earlier radioactive therapy had stopped working. Detailed results are expected at a future medical meeting.

Bristol Myers paid approximately $4.1 billion for RYZ101's developer, RayzeBio, in 2024. This week's result gives that investment a significant clinical milestone and adds a fresh question to the radiation story: how many other cancers could benefit if these powerful particles can be delivered effectively?

Alpha Tau Medical (NASDAQ: DRTS) is pursuing a different delivery method. Its Alpha DaRT technology places radioactive sources directly inside a tumor. With studies spanning skin, pancreatic and brain cancers, the company is testing whether local delivery can give alpha radiation a broader role in cancer care.

Billions are moving into radioactive medicine

The sector's deal activity has continued this year. On September 21, Telix Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: TLX) announced an agreement to acquire ITM for $1.65 billion upfront on a cash-free, debt-free basis, plus up to $700 million tied to milestones. ITM brings both isotope production and a therapeutic pipeline with a completed Phase 3 program.

In August, Curium agreed to acquire Lantheus (NASDAQ: LNTH) in a transaction worth up to $8 billion, including contingent payments. That combination would unite manufacturing and therapeutics capabilities with an established U.S. diagnostics business. Both transactions remain subject to closing conditions.

These companies occupy different parts of nuclear medicine, but the spending shows the range of assets attracting substantial capital: medicines, radioactive materials, production networks and commercial access. Alpha Tau's place in that picture rests on its ability to put alpha radiation to work through a distinct treatment procedure.

Billions Behind Radiopharma Deal Announcements

Alpha Tau takes the radiation straight to the tumor

Alpha particles deliver concentrated energy over a short distance. Getting their source to the right place is central to the treatment. RYZ101 uses a targeting molecule attached to actinium-225 to reach cancer cells bearing a particular receptor, a protein on the cell surface.

Alpha DaRT uses tiny implanted sources containing radium-224. As the radium decays, it releases short-lived radioactive atoms that spread a limited distance and emit alpha particles. The aim is to destroy tumor tissue while limiting damage around it. Placement requires access to the tumor, while delivering the source directly avoids relying on a circulating targeting molecule to recognize it.

That distinction gives Alpha Tau its own development opportunity. The company can investigate local treatment across several tumor types using the same underlying technology. In pancreatic cancer, its 48-patient IMPACT pilot completed enrollment in August after multiple expansions, evaluating Alpha DaRT alongside first-line chemotherapy. Initial results are targeted for early 2027 to help shape a planned pivotal study.

There is also an early signal for combining local radiation with immunotherapy. In July, Alpha Tau reported tumor responses in all nine evaluable patients from an 11-patient head-and-neck cancer study combining Alpha DaRT with pembrolizumab, marketed as Keytruda. Four had complete responses and five had partial responses. The small, uncontrolled study cannot establish the combination's advantage over either treatment alone, but it gives the company a concrete result to investigate in larger studies.

A commercial pathway is taking shape alongside the trials

Alpha Tau's June agreement with Tolmar gives the urology company exclusive U.S. commercialization rights for prostate cancer. Alpha Tau retains clinical development, manufacturing and supply responsibilities. The agreement provides for up to $161.5 million in potential development, regulatory and commercial milestones for the first indication.

Tolmar also completed a $20 million equity investment and paid $15 million toward U.S. manufacturing expansion, Alpha Tau reported in August. CEO Uzi Sofer described the business as developing into a “broad, multi-indication platform with a partnered commercial pathway.”

The next evidence is approaching. Alpha Tau's 88-patient ReSTART pivotal study in recurrent skin cancer is fully enrolled, with top-line results targeted for late 2026 or early 2027. Additional data from its REGAIN recurrent glioblastoma pilot are expected around year-end. U.S. commercialization remains subject to clinical and regulatory success, but these studies give the platform specific opportunities to advance.

Bristol Myers' result adds clinical substance to the industry's investment in alpha radiation. For Alpha Tau, the next chapter is whether direct delivery can produce persuasive evidence across its own cancer programs. With a pivotal readout approaching and a commercial partner already contributing capital, that question could earn the company a larger place in the sector's unfolding story.
